LABOUR RETAINS SEAT
SOUTH HAMMERSMITH BYELECTION MAJORITY LESS THAN AT GENERAL ELECTION LONDON, February 24. Labour retained the South Hammersmith seat at to-day’s by-election, which resulted:— W. T. Williams (Labour) .. 15,223 Anthony Fell (Conservative) .. .. 13,610 Labour’s majority at the General Election was 3458. Since then there has been a considerable change in the electorate. More than 8000 new voters have come on the roll. In the three and a half years since the General Election the Conservatives have been unable to wrest a single seat from Labour. To-day’s byelection was regarded as a real trial of strength between the two parties. It is estimated that about 100 members of Parliament helped in the campaign. It was one of the fiercest and noisiest by-elections for many years, with the full weight of both party machines thrown into the fight. Seventy per cent, of the electorate voted. The vacancy was caused by the death of Mr W. T. Adams.
