MAN’S DEATH IN MOUNTAINS
INQUEST OPENED AT ' TIMARU From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, February 25. Two members of the Tararua Tramping Club party who were with him when rhe accident occurred made statements when the inquest was opened at Timaru this afternoon into the death of William James Butcher, a retired civil servant, aged 59, of Dasent street, Karori. Wellington, who slipped and fell down a 100 feet rock slope near the Hooker Hut in the Mount Cook region on Tuesday evening. Mr Butcher’s body was brought to Timaru to-day from the Hermitage. Accounts of the accident given by Robert James Whittaker, aged 43. of Clutha avenue, Khandallah, Wellington, who was the leader of the party, and Vivienne Valierie Hitchmough. also of Wellington, a member of the party of seven, closely followed those already published in the press. The Coroner. 'Mr M. M. Enting. J.P.) adjourned the proceedings sine die. and ordered a post-mortem examination of the body.
