CIVIC CENTRE

Sir,—l quite agree that a town hall and civic centre are necessary, if they fulfil the needs of all the community, and the most important, to my mind, is the mothers. I hope, therefore, to see some progressive councillor advocate the inclusion of a residential nursery, rooms for women’s organisations to rent moderately for room (we still have only two in Christchurch), play centre, and All these should be completely staffed. They have done it in other centres, and surely our councillors are as progressive. Might I suggest that the council appoint a women’s committee for inclusion in the very im P orta nt deliberations which must occur before this idea can become a concrete racx. Yours, etc.. MAy £ FUREY February 25, 1949.

Sir—Like other readers I am wondering why the City Council is prepared to spend so much money on a civic centre to be placed in a back street as if something it is ashamed of. A more suitable site is the one at present occupied by the Public Library (which should be pulled down) and the Canterbury Club. Here there would be only two occupiers to deal with, a glorious river frontage, and a much more central site. Why, even Horticultural Society is more far-sighted and has chosen this attractive area for its new headquarters, and more power to it!— Yours, etc., GO WEST. February 25, 1949.

Sir,—l also agree with “Citizen.” It is more than 40 years since the proposed site and plans were explained to me. No other site could be so suitable or so beautiful. Make a start and the money will be found somehow.—Yours, etc., MUSIC LOVER. February 25, 1949.
