JOURNALISTS’ AWARD
COMPLETE AGREEMENT IN CONCILIATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 25. Complete agreement upon the terms of two awards for journalists was reached yesterday by the Conciliation Council, which had been sitting in Wellington since Tuesday under the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr H. M. Hopper). One award will apply to journalists in provincial towns and the other to those in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. A separate dispute -was created, by the Auckland Journalists’ Union and its claims are to be considered by the Conciliation Council next month. Principal matters in dispute were the application of the five-day week to newspaper work and the question of extra payments for working on Saturdays and Sundays. Existing provisions upon the former subject were amended to provide for the limitation of ordinary hours to 10 days in a fortnight in offices where this arrangement has been established, and for modification where necessary in other cases. Salaries were reviewed, and a clause was added providing for the payment ot a weekly allowance of 5 per cent, in compensation for working during week-ends, upon public holidays when newspapers are published, and on more than 10 days in a fortnight.
