LACK OF TRAINED MEN IN BUTCHERS’ SHOPS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 25. Some butchers’ shops in Auckland suburbs may have to close, unless more trained assistants can be obtained. The staff thus saved would be sent to other shops. Shops in the city are so short-handed that customers have to wait a long time before being served. About 100 more trained tradesmen are wanted immediately, Labour Department officials said to-day. No butchers had registered for employment for years. They thought the shortage was because few lads were offering as apprentices. Meanwhile older men were retiring and the ranks were thinning. They did not agree that higher wages in unskilled trades were drawing men away from the butchering trade.
