AMERICAN SPY SYSTEM
BILL TO GIVE LEGAL STATUS PROTECTION FOR ALIEN INFORMANTS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 23. The United States House of Representatives Armed Services Committee to-day approved a bill to legalise the United States spy system and to protect aliens who work for it. The bill would give full statutory backing for the first time to the top-secret Central Intelligence Agency which was formed two years ago. It would grant residence in the United States each year to 100 aliens giving valuable information to United States agents, waiving all the admissibility laws. It was reported that Central Intelligence Agency officials had told Congressmen that the aim of the bill was to attract renegade Communists who might have important information about countries behind the Iron Curtain. If the bill becomes law the agency will be able to continue spending without public accounting or an annual budget. The names and number of its employees would remain secret.
