NORTH ATLANTIC PACT
MR HENRY WALLACE’S VIEWS
WASHINGTON, February 23. The North Atlantic Pact would bankrupt the country and might destroy the United Nations, said Mr Henry Wallace before the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee. He described the Marshall Plan as a political tool in the cold war, and said it was rebuilding Germany while failing to revive Western Europe. Mr Wallace said: “The North Atlantic Pact is a most dangerous step, as it means that we are going to establish military bases around the periphery of Russia. These moves will lead to bankruptcy for the United States and Western Europe, and invite a war which no nation can win.” He renewed his plea to President Truman to talk peace terms face to face with Mr Stalin.
