LOST SHOES
Sir, —The paragraph under this heading to-day is very illuminating. It is only one example of the present-day trend to petty thieving due first to lack of parental control and second to lack of discipline in the State schools. Surely it was the duty of the headmaster to administer a caning rather than to condone the theft? My sympathy is with the fruitgrower, who is a heavy loser nowadays.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER LOSER. February 22, 1947. ANTI Sir,—lf “No Bets, Few Drinks” is true to his pen-name and the rest of the community were similarly minded, there would be neither “antis” nor “windy, wordy correspondence.” Small wonder that few supporters of off-course betting and extended licensing hours air their views; they know there is little to say, and that little mere supposition, while the opponent know from the actual experience of other countries what a curse the adoption of both proposals would be. Moreover, the “Antis” are neither prudes nor extremists, but reasonablyminded people who see the danger of introducing legislation that will undoubtedly result in a deterioration of the character of the citizens of this country.—Yours, etc., L. R. BURGESS. February 22, 1949. [“No Bets, Few Drinks” was permitted to comment lightly on the character of correspondence now open under two headings. As correspondence could not be continued under the third heading without confusion of their subjects, the above rejoinder is to be considered final. Ed., “The Press.”]
