OBSERVATION OF EARTHQUAKES
MODERN PLANT NEEDED IN CHRISTCHURCH The Christchurch Magnetic Observatory should be equipped with modern and more sensitive earthquake recorders because of its important place in world seismology, said Dr. Beno Gutenberg, director of the seismology laboratory of the Californian Institute of Technology at Pasadena, after a visit to the observatory yesterday. There was no other, station on the same latitude or to the south, so that its recordings had considerable significance in correlations oversea. The station checked earth movement along the earthquake belt to the south running through Macquarrie Island and was in a key position for the whole circum-polar area.
