TRAMWAY APPEAL BOARD

APPOINTMENT OF MEMBER QUESTIONED “I do not feel obliged to support this appointment,” said Mr C. C. Holland commenting at a meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Board on Mon oay on the appointment of the deputychairman (Mr J. E. Jones) as the board’s representative on the Tramway Appeal Board for three years. The former representative was Mr R. A. Young. “This tribunal is a judicial body set up to hear appeals by employees against the decision of the board.” said Mr Holland. “Because of this members should adopt a judicial attitude when they sit on the tribunal. I do not suggest that Mr Jones will not adopt this attitude, but the board is guilty of a grave discourtesy to Mr Young. Mr Young is a man of judicial mind and he took a lot of trouble to preserve an open mind when he was required to sit as a member of the tribunal. He was not a partisan, and is the type of man who may one day be called upon to preside in the Supreme Court.” The board recorded its appreciation of Mr Young’s services.
