MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TUESDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) IMPRISONMENT Archibald Stewart, a labourer, aged 63 years, appeared on a charge of assaulting Constable George William Stonehouse while executing his duty. He was further charged with using indecent language in Otley street on February 8, using threatening language on February 8, and using obscene language in Otley street on February 21. He pleaded not guilty to all four charges. The accused was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, on the first charge and convicted and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour on the second, the sentences to be cumulative. On the other two charges he was convicted and discharged. Giving evidence. Constable Stonehouse said that after a complaint he went to Otley street to arrest the accused, who attacked him with a washing board and also resisted by kicking and punching. He was convicted and fined £2 with costs, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Alice Fay Hill, a domestic, aged 41, was charged with being drunk at Lyttelton on February 21. She was further charged with procuring liquor while being a prohibited person. Pleading guilty to both charges, she was convicted and, ordered to be detained in an inebriates' institution for a period of 12 months. DESERTION James Cullen, an assistant steward, aged 21 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of deserting from the tanker Narica at Lyttelton on November 3, 1948. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.

TRAFFIC OFFENCES Fines were imposed as follows, with costs unless otherwise stated, forbreaches of the traffic regulations in cases brought by the Transport Department:—no driver’s licence: Gordon Brand. 20s. Defective brakes: Nicoll Bros.. Ltd., £2. Excessive rear ovdYhang: Randolph Wood Supply. Ltd., £2. Exceeding speed limit: Raymond Arthur Sanders, £2 10s (no warrant of fitness, 10s). In cases brought by the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council, fines were imposed, with costs, unless otherwise stated, as follows:—parking over time limit: Gregor Stuart Arthur, 10s. No warrant of fitness: Hazel Winifred Donald, 10s. Exceeding the speed limit: Herbert E. Garlick, £2; John Wafer McTaggart, £2. On a charge brought by the Police Department, Reuben Charles Whitford was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs for driving without a licence.
