SIAMESE PROCLAIM EMERGENCY
“TO COMBAT COMMUNIST MENACE 99 (Rec. 7 ifm.) BANGKOK, Feb. 22 A state of national emergency was declared in Bangkok yesterday “to combat the growing Communist menace in Siam.” Political circles were surprised that the emergency was not proclaimed until four days after a Cabinet resolution approving it. Some circles attribute the delay to criticism by political opponents of some of the measures proposed by the Prime Minister (Marshal Pibul Songgram). MURDERS ALLEGED BY VATICAN LONDON. February 21. The Vatican radio said to-day that the Chinese Communists had murdered 483 Roman Catholic priests. 16 friars, and 13 monks.
