EXCHANGE OF STUDENTS

20 AMERICANS COMING TO N.Z.

RESEARCH ON RESOURCES OF DOMINION

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 22. Under a United States student exchange scheme, authority has been given for 20 American professors, research workers, and graduate scholars to conduct research into New Zealand’s natural resources. An attempt will be made to find commercial uses for New Zealand’s huge pumice deposits and a practicable method of smelting her ironsands. This was stated by the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (Sir David Smith), in an address to the British-American Co-operation Movement to-day. “If some way could be found to use New Zealand pumice in concrete, it would be of tremendous advantage to the Dominion,” said Sir David Smith. The subjects to be studied by the American experts would include geology, botany, agriculture (particularly dairying), earthquakes, and frost protection. A party of 20 New Zealand professors, graduate students, and students would study at United States universities, said Sir David Smith. They would be financed under a reciprocal scheme until their arrival in Vancouver. After that, because of the dollar situation, their future movements would be indefinite. The International Institute of Education in New York would probably find posts to enable them to continue their studies and research.
