CRICKET

FINAL ROUNDS OF COMPETITION » ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR DRAW • Arrangements for the drawing of teams for the closing stages of the senior cricket competition were made at the half-yearly meeting last evening of the Canterbury Cricket Association. Mr R. C. Saunders, for the management committee, said that it ’had been decided earlier that after the end of the first round, the first and fourth, and the second and third teams, in each half of the draw, should meet, and those games had been played. The next round provided that the two winners in each half and the two losers in each half should meet, and those games would take place on Saturday. This season, however, a very parly start had been made and it was possible that after Saturday’s games two more rounds would be played. It was recommended that in the first of these, teams be drawn against those in their own sections that they had not met, and that if a further round was possible the first team on points should play the second, the third play the fourth, and so on. These arrangements would apply to the three top grades. Mr D. A. CohHUe said that it was dangerous to interfere with the draw, particularly at the close of a season. It was a temptation to try to make the competition interesting. In future the “clock” system should be used.

The association was committed to a system of promotion and relegation, said Mr T. A. Tucker. That being so, every opportunity should be taken to ensure that the top team was the top, and the bottom team the bottom. The suggestions outlined by Mr Saunders were adopted. It was agreed to thank Messrs I. B. Cromb and A. V. Belston for the work they had done on the production of the cricket brochure. F. Dennis, the former Yorkshire professional, was granted permission to play, for Lancaster Park on Saturday, without the usual two weeks’ residential qualification. The Otago Association wrote confirming that its match against Canterbury would be played at Dunedin on January 7,9, 10, and 11. Brabin Shield Team It was announced that, the ’ following team would represent the South Island Brabin Shield teams against the North Island at Wellington on March 9, 10, and 11:—I. H. Burrows (Otago), captain; W. Payne, J. Alabaster, G. Wilson (Southland); W. Gough, G. Graham, M. H. Buckenham, T. Flaws (Otago); M. Chapple,, M. B. Poore, J. Harliwich (Canterbury); A.
