SOUTH AFRICA’S DEFENCES
EXTENSION OF AREA PROPOSED INCLUSION OF COLONIAL TERRITORIES (Rec. 7 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 20. It was impossible to organise Africa’s defence so long as Swaziland, Bechuanaland, and Basutoland belonged tb Britain, said the South African Min- 1 ister of Defence (Mr F. C. Erasmus) at Malmesbury. He said that he hoped that the Prime Minister (Dr. D. F. Malan) would find time to tackle the problem and have the territories incorporated in the Union. Although the .three territories are in South Africa, they are not part of the Union, but are administered by a High Commissioner appointed by Britain. Bechuanaland is the largest of the territories, lying north of the Cape Province and the Transvaal. Basutoland is surrounded by the Orange Free State, Natal and the Cape Province, and Swaziland is bounded by the Transvaal. Natal, and the Portuguese territory of Mozambique.
