BURMA REVOLT
KAREN STATE WITHIN UNION PROPOSED FIGHTING CONTINUES NORTH OF RANGOON (Rec. 7 p.m.) RANGOON, Feb. 20. The Regional Autonomy Inquiry Commission set up by the .Burmese Government has unanimously recommended the formation of a separate Karen State within the Union of Burma. Fighting is continuing against the Karen rebels, and Government troops, supported by navy men and fire from gunboats, have surrounded the Karens in the Insein area, a few miles north of Rangoon. The rebels continue to offer stiff resistance from behind their barricade of rice bags, and observers believe that the battle may develop into a decisive engagement. A Government communique says that Karen and Communist rebels attacked and occupied Yamethm, an important town about 275 miles north of Rangoon, on the Mandalay railway.
