AIRLINE STRIKE AT BOMBAY

(Rec. 1 p.m.) BOMBAY, February 18. Armed police were sent to guard Santa Cruz airport, Bombay, when about 3000 workers of Air India went on strike for a 40-hour week, revision of pay, and increased cost-of-living allowances. Air crew, ground engineers, and traffic executives are not affected by the strike, which has been declared illegal under the Bombay Industrial Disputes Act. All internal services have been suspended, but international services are being maintained.

Prohibition Bill in Bombay.— Under a Prohibition Bill introduced in the Legislative Assembly, Bombay Province, with a population of 30,000,000, will “go dry’’ from April, 1950. Mr L. M. Patel, the Bombay Minister of Excise, said that this would mean a loss of £6,750,000 a year in excise and revenue. The bill provides that the Provincial Government may grant special permits for the use of liquor for certain purposes, including sacramental and medicinal needs.—Bombay, February 19.
