The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Frey berg) and Lady Frey berg will give a garden party at Government House, Wellington, on Thursday afternoon. The death occurred in Wellington last week, after a short serious illness, of Senora Conti, wife of the Consul-general for tbe Argentine Republic. Senor Guillermo T. Conti. Senora Conti had been seriously ill since the birth of a daughter last Friday. The Contis arrived in Wellington in April of last year when the consulate was reopened for the first time since before the war. Miss Elsie Zimmern (London), a prominent worker in womens organisations in England, wilt arrive in Can terbury from the West Coast to-day and will be the guest of Mrs William Deans, Sandown. Darfield. until Thursday. On Wednesday she will visit Christchurch and will address a combined rpeeting of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and Women’s Institutes. Miss Beryl Hearnden. who has been associated with Miss Zimmarn in England, and who has been visiting South Canterbury, will also attend the meeting. The following students, who sat their examination for homecraft teachers in Dunedin and are now doing their final year in Christchurch, all passed in biology, physiology, homecraft, and home science:—T. The first woman to drive a motorcar from Timaru to the Hermitage, Mrs Mary Murray, who lives at her lakeside home of “Pennscroft,” Lake Tekapo. celebrated her seventy-ninth birthday last week by entertaining her family and many of her grandchildren at tea. Two of her sons. Mr Bruce Murray, of “Braemar.” who is a member of the Mackenzie County Council, and Mr Gerald Murray, of “Glenmore,” both have stations nearby. Mrs Murray, who is one of the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country, still drives her car. ’

The report of the charge sister of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society (Miss E. J. Carter), presented last week to a meeting of the executive committee, showed that in the two months, December and January. fi23 notifications of births had been received, 593 new baby cases had been attended to, 3143 visits had been paid to children in their homes, 7136 visits of babies had been made at the society’s rooms, and the total number of babies under supervision was 8319. In discharging their duties the nurses had travelled 3314 miles in December end 2137 miles in January. During December two sets of twins were admitted to the Karitane baby hospital and in January three sets were admitted During the two months 19 preipature jpabies were admitted and 20 discharged. The number of babies admitted to the hospital during December and January was 75; 74 were discharged and the daily average in hospital was 27. Miss E. J. Carter, charge sister at the Plunket Society’s rooms, Chester street, reported to a recent meeting of the general committee that during January, appointments were made for children between the ages of two and five years to attend the central rooms to enable foot measurements to be taken by representatives of the New Zealand Standards Institute. The measurements were taken of both feet by a machine and other details were carefully noted. This survey is being done throughout the Dominion and eventually it should prove of value in providing children with better footwear in correct fittings.
