ENTERTAINMENT OF SCIENTISTS
TROTTING MEETING AND VISIT TO AKAROA Many of the delegates to the Pacific Science Congress and their wives were the quests of the New Brighton Trotting Club at its meeting at Brighton on Saturday. The president of the club (Mr T. E. Johnson) and his committee provided racebooks and tickets for the members’ stand for all the visitors and entertained them at luncheon and afternoon tea. The Travel Club arranged transport to and from the course. Another party drove to Woodend beach and enjoyed a bathe and a picnic tea. Yesterday about 250 of the scientists and their wives were taken by buses to Akaroa. After lunch, the party split into groups. The geologists visited Onawe peninsula, the botanists set out on another expedition, the French visitors were entertained by Miss le Lievre. Many visited the monument erected at the spot where the British flag was hoisted in 1840. The party was entertained at afternoon tea by the Mayor (Mr Robert Bruce) and Mrs Bruce in the beautiful garden at their home, overlooking the harbour.
