WILDING SHIELD CHALLENGE

WELLINGTON BEATS WAIKATO (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 20. As on the first day of the Waikato challenge for the Wilding Shield tennis trophy, all Wellington singles players were successful on Saturday except McCardle and the doubles victories were shared. Wellington won by eight to four. A gusty northerly wind swept the courts. McCardle, playing I. Easton, apparently was unable to employ any defence other than lobs against attacks from the net. This, and his unsteady play in aH except the second set, gave Easton an easy win. J. Hamilton (Wellington) hit hard forehand drives erraticaHy to. lose the first set to L. M. Roach. His game steadied later and he won in the third set. M. Wakefield (Waikato), hampered against McKenzie by a weak knee, played chiefly a defensive game. Results (WeHington names first) were:— R. McKenzie beat M. Wakefield, 6-1, 6-2; C. Angas beat L. P. Roach, 8-6, 6-4; J. Hamilton beat L. M. Roach, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1; A. McCardle lost to I. Easton, 1-6, 7-5, 0-6. McKenzie and Angas beat Wakefield p - Roach - 6-3, 6-2; Hamilton and McArdle lost to L. M. Roach and Easton, 5-7. 2-6.
