AUCKLAND BOY WINS FIFTH TITLE CANTERBURY ENTRANTS PLACED (P A.) NAPIER, February 20. When W. M. Amos (Auckland) sprinted away from the field in the last length to win the boys’ 220 yards freestyle, he won his fifth title at the national junior swimming championships, which concluded on Saturday evening. In none of the races was he hard pressed. After a heavy programme most competitors were tiring and no records were broken in the last session. Several of the times were close. A special trophy w’as presented to Miss W. Griffin (Auckland), who beat both the senior and junior women’s records for 220 yards freestyle on the first day. MILE HARBOUR RACE AT TIMARU From Our Own Reporter TIMARU. February 20. The mile race in the Timaru Harbour for the Speechly Cup was held on Saturday in good weather. The race resulted m a closely-fought finish between D. ORourke, off Scratch, and J. Day (IJmin), the scratch man winning by two feet ORourke put up fastest time of 25min 10 l-ssec. This is the sixth time O’Rourke has won the race. His form augurs weH for his chances in the New Zealand three miles’ championship, which he won last year.
