URUGUAY AGREES TO ENTER POOL
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 16. The secretariat of the International Wheat Conference announced to-day that Uruguay would contribute “a small quantity” of wheat to a world pool. Uruguay is the fifth exporter prepared to join a world wheat agreement. The others are the United States, Canada, Australia, and Russia. It is believed, however, that Uruguay will not be able to guarantee over 10,000.000 to 20,000,000 bushels. It is thought that although this is a relatively small amount it strengthens the already strong hand of the importers in seeking a substantially lower maximum price. Behind the scenes discussions on price are proceeding, but it is believed that no marked progress has been made towards a compromise by either exporters or importers.
