V Sambalina was somewhat disinclined to enter the stalls, but he gave n *u re tro uble than two or three of r 1 ® ° , er , runners and his behaviour was a marked improvement on that he displayed on the West Coast holiday circuit. Play Disappointing . Wei £ht and an interrupted preparation Because of a cold contributed towards the moderate Showing of Full Play, the topweight with 9-0, in the Craven Plate at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting last Saturday. The Salmagundi P nade h is usual slow beginning, but tne dash that characterised his efforts to win two races at the New Zealand Cup meeting were missing over the final stages. He was in eighth position just behind Jan with half a mile to run, but he failed to make any further impression on the leaders and was a moderate seventh at the post.

Tauloch in Good Order The champion three-year-old Tauloch gave an exhibition gallop at Wanganui on Saturday afternoon. He travelled easily from the, five furlongs and speeded up in the straight. Tne Balloch colt looks none the worse for his hard race in the Trentham Stakes on the final day of the Wellington meeting, and will strip in good order for the Jackson Stakes, the mile weight-for-age race on the second day of the Wanganui meeting on Saturday.

If he is successful, Tauloch will establish a fresh record for stake winnings in a single season. Tauloch’s second in the Trentham Stakes took his stake earnings on to £11,075 for the season, and he requires £705 to equal Signal Officer’s record. His aggregate for 17 months’ racing is £16,025.

Disappointing Helio raced without dash in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, being last to finish. Since his impressive winning performance in the Dunedin Cup on December 27, he has failed to produce his best form, although he raced promisingly in the Summer Handicap on the final day at Trentham after • covering much extra ground. The hard tracks are not to the’Neptune horse’s liking, and he may develop better form later in the season. Not Easily Persuaded Some interest was shown in the first appearance as a steeplechaser of Benbecula at Winton on Saturday. He had to be hard ridden into each of his fences, and at the post and rails at the end of six furlongs he ran off. He was taken back again and completed the course after some persuasion. Since he was first put to lumping Benbecula has shown a dislike for the business, but he has yet to fall and is quite capable of negotiating steeplechasing country when inclined. Impressive Effort Ara Chief, a half-brother by Royal Chief to a useful winner in Araboa, has taken some time to be returned a winner, but his success over nine furlongs at Winton last Saturday was full of merit. He made the pace from barrier rise and, after having a break of 10 lengths on his field in the middle stages, he hung on in the run home to win well. Ara Chief has passed through the hands of several trainers since he began racing, and his nine furlongs at Winton in imin 53 l-ssec was by far his best effort to date. ’ Widespread Activities

It is a long way from Winton, a country centre in Southland, to Caulfield, Melbourne, but the fact that horses bred by the late Mr W. T. Hazlett, of Invercargill, have in recent weeks won races in those places is an illustration.of the part'played by Mr Hazlett in the sphere of racing and breeding. St. Razzle showed .brillianf form to win the Park Stakes at Caulfield last month, and in the Barton Handicap a week later he had his second successive win. Those were the St. Magnus gelding’s first wins in the . colours of Mrs L. R. Buxton since she paid a high price for the gelding some months ago. When the horses owned by the late Mr Hazlett were sold in Australia last winter, the Melbourne trainer, Jack Holt, bought St. Razzle for 2500gns and then passed him on to Mrs Buxton when she expressed a desire to have a good horse carrying her colours. Yilderim, dam of St. Razzle, was a descendant of the great mare Simper through Razzle Dazzle, which won 12 races including the - New Zealand Oaks, Eclipse Stakes, the Great Easter Handicap, and the Challenge Stakes, beating Gloaming. At the Winton meeting on Saturday the steeplechase was won by Whisk, a fiveyearrold chestnut gelding by Sir Simper from Fleet Lady, which was purchased by Mr P. J. Boyle, of Heddon Bush, for 90gns at the dispersal sale of the late Mr Hazlett’s Chelandry Stud in January, 1943. Fleet Lady, which did not race, is a half-sister by Anomaly to The Smuggler which won several good races, including , the Great Autumn Handicap. Whisk’s third dam, Miss Signal, was a daughter of Miss Stent, which has founded a most successful “half-bred” family,, her descendants, including Signal Officer and Sir Garnish, having won more than £50,000. Greymouth Jockey Club Acceptances (racing events) and withdrawals (trotting event)s for the first day close to-day. February 9, 1949, at 9 p.m.— € M. J. Fogarty, Secretary, ’Phone 296.
