DRIVERS’ STOP WORK MEETING
EMPLOYERS’ STATEMENT Christchurch carrying firms have been recommended by their association not to begin work until 10 a.m. to-morrow so that all drivers may attend the stop-work meeting if they wish to. At the same time the association deprecates the holding of a stopwork meeting. After the subject had been discussed at a meeting of the Christchurch and Suburban Carriers’ and Customhouse Agents’ Association, the following statement was made by the secretary (Mr J. B. Taylor):— “For more than 30 years there have been no difficulties between employers and employees in the Canterbury district and, while we deprecate the calling of such a meeting, especially on a Friday, it was felt that if the union considered such a meeting necessary all drivers should be given the opportunity of attending if they wished to do so.
“It is considered that there are no real differences between the employers and the employees at the moment and it is hoped that a full discussion will clear the air.
"A decision was made, therefore, to recommend to members of the association that work on Friday should not be commenced until 10 a.m.”
