APPRENTICESHIP ORDER (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 15. The Arbitration Court has made an order governing the condition of apprenticeship in the painting and decorating industry for the whole of New Zealand. The order provides that every contract of apprenticeship and every alteration to it shall be registered with the district commissioner within 28 days after the employment of the apprentice has begun, in the case of the original contract, or within 14 days of an alteration, in the case of an altered contract. If the contract or alteration is not presented for registration, the parties will be each liable to a fine not exceeding £lO under the Apprentices Act, 1948. The. employer shall not require or permit an apprentice under 18 to work overtime in excess of five hours in any week, provided that when the apprentice is engaged on country work, he shall not be required or permitted to work overtime in excess of 16 hours in any one week. The parent or guardian of an apprentice under 18 is given the right to object to an apprentice being employed on country work. No a o'-.ent ice Is permitted to work overtime unless under the constant supervision of a competent tradesman, and the employer shall not require an apprentice to work overtime when the apprentice is attending evening classes at a technical college, school, or other approved institution. The minimum age at wihch a person may be apprenticed is fixed at 15, and a person desiring to enter into apprenticeship contract shall be required to produce evidence to the local committee that he has obtained a primary school leaving certificate or has obtained an equivalent educational qualification.
