PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY

ST. MARGARET’S COLLEGE

The new syllabus had been in operation long enough to give a general idea of its tendencies, said the headmistress of St. Margaret’s College (Mrs C. L. Young) at the annual prize-giving ceremony held in the Radiant Theatre last evening. “It has, I think, brought with it a valuable flexibility in subjects and courses, .but . the schools will have to recognise that this flexibility brings a danger which only they themselves can counter. We must guard against the woolliness which so often goes with vague subjects, such as general science and social studies. “As a history specialist, I deplore the tendency to substitute social studies for authentic history, and I can only hope that the present type of school certificate history paper, for instance, merely represents a passing phase,” Mrs Young said. Part of the programme for the evening was musical items, with violin obbligato by Mrs Francis Bate and Miss Lesley Anderson, and carols and tableaux by the choir and orchestra. The prizes were presented by the Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop WestWatson). The Prize List The prize list follows: First-class Awards.—Standard IV: Sally Edwardes, Janet Hoy, Lynette Wilson.
