AXLE LOADINGS ON ROADS

MOTOR UNIONS’ VIEWS (P.A.) . WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. The North and South Island Motor Unions have issued a joint statement offering their strongest support for any action taken for “the preservation of the reading system against heavy damage by excess axle loads.” The need for such action was urgent, said the statement, adding that it was really a question of deciding what was best from the aspect of -an ordinary, good business, financial policy. The high axle loads desired by a section of heavy transport operators would require costly reading works for a small saving by the operators. “There appears, unfortunately, to be no attempt by the authorities to enforce axle load limits at present laid down.” the statement concluded. A conference on axle loading is scheduled for to-morrow.
