RECOVERY IN FRANCE

MR MONNET REPORTS

INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY INCREASES (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) PARIS, Dec. 13. French industrial activity for the first six months of 1948 had reached an index figure of 114, compared with the basic figure of 100 for 1938, said the French Planning High Commissioner (Mr Jean Monnet) to-day. This, he added, indicated progress greater than that of many foreign countries, including Britain, Belgium, and Sweden, but he warned the nation that its recovery had been based on foreign aid. Mr Monnet added: “We are living above our means. When American aid stops our living standard will crumble, if that aid has not been replaced by the product of our labour.” Mr Monnet said that France’s export tonnage had risen by 36 per cent., but that in terms of world prices their value had fallen by 15 per cent. In consequence there was a deficit of 890,000,000 dollars.
