LICENSING AND GAMING

REFERENDUM MAY BE HELD IN MARCH PREPARATIONS ALREADY BEING MADE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, December 14. Advice that a gaming and licencing referendum may be held on Marcu 2 or March 9, 1949, has been received by Auckland returning officers from the chief electoral officer in Wellington. Returning officers are asked to make preliminary arrangements for polling places and clerks. Returning officers are asked to see that the lists of polling places are brought up to date. Where it is considered that adjustments should be made, recommendations will be sent to Wellington. The rolls to be used for the polls will be the same as those used at the last General Election, with the addition of another supplementary roll, which will contain the names of persons who have reached voting age since November, 1946, and those who have qualified for residential reasons. The circular letter does not contain any advice about purging the rolls. The electorates which were constituted for the- last General Election will be used for the poll. Persons who do not vote in the constituency in which they are registered will be required to cast postal or absentee votes.
