U.S. PROPOSAL FOR ANTARCTIC
REJECTION BY NORWAY (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 22. Norway has rejected an American proposal for the internationalisation of part of the Antarctic. This was reported by diplomatic officials in Washington to-day. Norway’s Ambassador to the United States (Mr Wilhelm Munthe de Morgenstierne) made known his country’s opposition in a Note presented to the State Department on November 15. Diplomatic officials say that Norway prefers to look after its own interests m the area. The Norwegians have claimed two large areas, Peter I Island and Queen Land, both of which are used as bases for Norwegian whaling expeditions. Argentina and Chile have already opposed the American internationalisation proposal.
