COMPULSORY JURY SERVICE FOR WOMEN

Sir,—The comment on my letter by a member of the National Council of Women states that there are 94.948 women in its private group. This being so, with legislation • on the Statute Book permitting of voluntary women jurors, I am sure there are more than enough voluntary women to supply our Courts of Justice for many years. Why then, may I ask, are these organisations using the “Hitler” method of trying to force other women to do this service? If they like this work by all means let them do it; but a Gestapo is not desirable in the community. Our liberty, which was so dearly bought, is being taken from us bit by bit by the above unnecessary measures. I feel sure, if the doctors of New Zealand were asked, they would confirm my statement of the many nervous and unfit women in New Zealand to be jurors.—Yours, etc., INDIGNANT WOMAN. October 28. 1948.
