SHOP ASSISTANTS’ UNION DECISIONS The view that the question of conscription for national service should be submitted to a referendum was affirmed by the Canterbury Shop Assistants' Union when national defence was discussed. The union decided to support the National Council of the Federation of Labour in its decision to withhold the calling of a special conference to discuss the issue until the return to New Zealand of the Prime Minister r (Mr Fraser).
