ISSUE OF IMPORT LICENCES
“ GROSS IRREGULARITIES ” ALLEGED STATEMENT BY BUREAU OF IMPORTERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 25. Alleging gross irregularities in the issue of import licences, the Bureau of Importers has asked the Minister of Customs (Mr W. Nash) to set up a Royal Commission to inquire into the administration of the import licensing system in New Zealand. The bureau wrote to Mr Nash asking for comments, in August, but no reply has been received. “Mr Nash stated in the House of Representatives yesterday that the import schedule for 1949 was ready three weeks ago. but had been delayed so that it could be discussed with representatives of manufacturers and retailers. and others.” said the president of the bureau (Mr E. W. Sinton) this morning. “As the principal body concerned with imports, our organisation has not been approached. In our opinion the new schedule has been held up through unwarranted interference from the Department of Industries and Commerce, and other Government departments,” added Mr Sinton.
