TWO BRITONS KILLED
ARAB AIRLINER SHOT DOWN ATTACK BY JEWISH FIGHTER __ _ _ LONDON, September 23. Two Britons and an Arab were killed when a Jewish fighter aeroplane shot down an Arab airliner in. flames after a pursuit oVer the Transjordan area to-day. The pilot and two other passengers, one of whom was an American, were injured. The Britons killed were Mr David Woodford, the "Daily Telegraph” correspondent, and Mr John Nixon, correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation. Mr Woodford, who during the war was personal aide and liaison officer for several high British officials,’ including Field-Marshal Lord Gort, Lord Moyne, and Sir Edward Grigg, joined the “Daily Telegraph” as Middle East correspondent in 1945. Mr Nixon was a war correspondent for Reuters in France and the Mediterranean before joining the 8.8. C. Arab Legion headquarters said that the aeroplane, which was flying from Beirut to Amman, was over Lebanon when the Jewish fighter began the attack. The fighter, which is described as of the Russian Yak type, followed the Arab aeroplane 18 miles into Transjordan, where it crashed in flames.
