CLAIMS BY ISRAELI GOVERNMENT
BERNADOTTE’S PLAN - OPPOSED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 24. “An Israeli Foreign Office spokesman opposed three points of Count .Bernadotte’s plan for Palestine,” says the British United Press correspondent in Tel Aviv.
“On Jerusalem, which Count Bernadotte proposed should be placed under United Nations control, the spokesmansaid: ‘My Government considers that it is entitled to claim Jerusalem as part of Israel.’ •
“Haifa, which Count Bernadotte suggested as a free port, should remain an integral part of Israel.” said the spokesman. “The Jews would also oppose Count Bernadotte’s recommendation that parts of the Negeb (southern desert legion) should be transferred to the Arabs.”
In Bagdad, Jamal Husseini, Foreign Minister in the new Arab Palestine Government, said that this Government was “a temporary measure in present circumstances.” He added that alter Palestine had been completely liberated the Palestinians would hold a plebiscite to determine their future. An official Arab communique .issued at Amman reported shooting throughout the night near the New Gate of Jerusalem. It added that two mines damaged a hotel and another explosion destroyed an Arab bank building near the Jaffa Gate.
The Jerusalem correspondent of the Associated Press says that Israeli police, in a drive to capture the Killers of Count Bernadotte, arrested an Arab who claimed that'he was one of 100 Arabs working hand-in-hand' with the Stern Gang. He said the Stern Gang had launched a new assassination campaign against "all foreign influences in the Middle East ” Reuter’s correspondent in Tel Aviv says that all the Israeli Cabinet Ministers, including Mr David Ben-Gurion, have received tetters threatening them with death for their action against the Stern Gang’s "Fatherland Front.”
