CENTRAL JAVA FIGHTING
COMMUNISTS OUTSIDE MADIUN (Rec. 7 p.m.) BATAVIA, Sept. 23. According to reports reaching Batavia to-night, the Communist rebels are fighting desperately on the outer screen of defences round Madiun, in Central Java. They are 12$ miles from the city. . It is reported that the rebels still hold important positions west and south of the city. The newspaper “Nasional” in Jogjakarta to-day said that the Communists’ coup in Madiun had been premature. A much bigger Communist plot to overthrow the Hatta Government had been planned for November.
