REFUGEES IN PALESTINE
N.Z. TO SEND BUTTER AND MILK POWDER
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 24. New Zealand will send 50 tons of butter and 25 tons of milk powder for the relief of Arab and Jewish refugees in Palestine.
This was announced this afternoon by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), who said that an appeal had been received by the Government from the late United Nations mediator in Palestine (Count Bernadotte).
Since New Zealand’s production was not enough for her own needs, wheat or barley could not be sent, said the Prime Minister. From the quantity of butter for export elsewhere by arrangement with the United Kingdom Government, the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission would make available 50 tons of butter, and Amalgamated Dairies would supply 25 tons of milk powder, all costs to be borne by the Government. In his message. Count Bernadotte said he was convinced that successful mediation could continue only if a solution were found to the most urgent aspects of a great human disaster affecting 330.000 destitute Arab refugees, and 7000 refugee Jews.
