EQUAL PAY FOR WOMEN
MOVE TO TEST EMPLOYERS’ REACTION
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 24. Pressure for the inclusion of the principle of equal pay for women is increasing in respect of awards due soon for renewal. The, first large-scale move to test employers’ reactions will be made in Wellington next w6ek, when equal pay for equal work will be claimed in the Conciliation Council by the New Zealand Clerical Workers’ Association. Seven-tenths of the membership of the seven affiliated unions are women. When the North Island Electrical Trades Union last sought a new award no agreement was reached in the Conciliation Council on a request for equal pay, and the Arbitration Court would not award equal rates. The union's policy is still to press the claim.
