EXITS, ENTRANCES, AND APPLAUSE
Sir, —While watching the performance of “The School for Scandal” last Thursday night, we wondered if we were practically alone in our categorical disapproval of the infuriating habit of applauding entrances and exits. The theatre, on Thursday night, had been bought out by the N.Z. Drama Council a lad seats allocated to its members, and it was to be expected that this more than usually interested audience would have been aware of the effect upon a play of applause during a scene. The effect, for examples of Vivien Leigh’s perfectly timed first entrance was completely ruined by this reprehensible practice. Enthusiasm and appreciation are no excuse for such misplaced tributes to great work. We wonder how this audience would have thrust in their applause at Hamlet’s first appearance.—Yours, etc., RAYMOND PARKES. COLIN HANSEN. ■ September 24, 1948. «
