RANGERS’ POWERS OF SEARCHING
REPORT OF REQUEST DENIED “rhe Press” Special Service GREYMOUTH, September 24. Referring to a report from Christchurch, that the Grey District Acclimatisation Society has requested that the power of rangers be extended to give them the right to search homes, Mr M. R. Bunt, secretary of the society, stated to-day that “no request, suggestion or proposal whatsoever along the lines stated’’ had been made by the organisation. He stated that tbe society had pointed out to the Marine Department the anomaly in the act whereby it was an offence to be in possession of salmon unlawfully taken, but not to be in possession of trout or perch also illegally obtained. A search warrant could be obtained where it was suspected that salmon illegally obtained could be found in certain premises, but none could be obtained in respect of trout.
“We had a long letter back from the Marine Department, indicating that the society had acted properly in pointing out the anomaly, admitting the anomaly and stating that it would be noted when drafting other regulations,” stated Mr Bunt.
