LABOUR FEDERATION AND COMMUNISTS
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. It was not in the power of any trades council to grant or recommend the rendering of financial or other support to any political party other than that to which the annual conference had pledged its support, said the national council of the Federation of Labour in a resolution adopted to-day. This decision was the sequel to an appeal made within the Federation of Labour some months ago for funds to assist two Communist speakers, Mr W. McAra and Mrs Constance Birchfield, in a Court case over the right to hold meetings in public places. An appeal was made by the Communist Party to trades councils. The matter was discussed at the annual conference at Dunedin in April, when it was decided to prohibit the national council or the national executive from recommending to any affiliation or trades council the rendering of financial or other support to any political party other than that to which the annual conference had pledged its support.
