NO DEVALUATION OF STERLING
STATEMENT BY SIR STAFFORD CRIPPS “WOULD BE SUICIDAL” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA, Sept. 22. The British Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) said today that Britain’s currency problems would not be over until at least 1952. He predicted that -some export and import controls might still be necessary after that.
He said there was absolutely no possibility of a devaluation of the pound. Such a move would be suicidal, as It would mean that Britain would have to pay more for imports and receive less for exports.
