MIGRANTS FOR NEW ZEALAND
SAILING OF ATLANTIS DELAYED BY STRIKE
OBTAINING WORKERS FOR HYDRO PROJECTS
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. The New Zealand emigrant ship Atlantis, which is due to sail from the Port of London at the end of this
month with 800 assisted single emigrants and 100 priority passengers, has been delayed by a go-slow strike among shipbuilding and engineering workers, and it is now unlikely that the ship will be ready to leave until the middle of October. The passenger accommodation of the Atlantis is at present being extended, and she is also undergoing her annual survey inspection.
A party of 103 emigrants, 62 men and 41 women, will sail for New Zealand to-morrow on the Rangitiki, and a second party of 100 will leave by the Mataroa on October 21. The men are mostly tradesmen of various types, and the women trained nurses, nurse trainees, and shorthand-typists. The New Zealand immigration authorities in London do not expect any trouble in finding the additional 1000 workers required for hydro-elec-tric projects in New Zealand. They have already sufficient unskilled labourers available to supply 600 workers of the type required, and it is expected that the remaining 400 tradesmen can also be obtained, chiefly from the present waiting list. The immigration authorities are still finding it much more difficult to get women migrants than men. This is mainly because of the demand for women workers in Britain and because in general the salaries paid in this country to women workers are equal to or better than those paid in New Zealand. Help for German Children.—Reuter’s correspondent in Paris says that the International Children’s Emergency Fund has announced that a United Nations survey mission will leave soon for Germs ny to plan the distribution of £550,000 for the benefit of German children in the three West- , ern zones.—London, September 22.
