BRITAIN LEADS IN STEEL
BIG IMPROVEMENT IN WEST GERMANY
(Rec. 8 p.m.) GENEVA. Sept. 22. Britain produced more than twice as much steel during the first six months of this year as any other European country publishing production figures, according to a report by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The report said that Britain had produced 7,686,000 metric tons by the end of June, which was 8 per cent, above the target set at the beginning of the year. If production continued at its present level Britain would exceed the 1948 target by over 2,000,000 tons.
The biggest production leap was made by the British and American zones of Germany. whei;e the average monthly output for the Second quarter of 1948 was 67 per cent, higher than the monthly average for 1947. The report added that production throughout Europe had increased by 27 per cent, over 1947.
