RUGBY FOOTBALL
WELLINGTON WINS AT TIMARU From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, September 22. Scoring 17 points in the second spell at Fraser Park, Timaru, this afternoon, the Wellington Rugby team beat South Canterbury by 22 points to 3. The Wellington team is on its way to Dunedin, where, it will play Otago for the Ranfurly Shield.
Securing possession from twice as many scrums as South Canterbury and a good proportion of line-outs, the Wellington forwards also excelled in the tight. The visiting back line did not impress as a brilliant combination, though it provided some sparkling individual play. M. Doyle was sound at full-back, and made one or two strong runs, but he was outclassed by his opposite number, J. Goddard, who has been selected to represent South Island. The Wellington fiveeighths. G. Delamore, did not come on till late in the second spell to replace an injured player, and was given little opportunity to shine.
Wellington’s tries were scored by J. May, M. Maskill, N. Mullin, and V. D. Bevan, L. Thomas converting two and kicking a penalty goal. P. King potted a goal. For South Canterbury, J. Goddard kicked a penalty goal.
