WATER FOR FIRE PROTECTION

RESTRICTION FOR SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

“Since Ballantyne’s fire the water department has had an unusually large number of inquiries concerning the installation of water connexions for sprinkler purposes,” reported the works committee last evening to the City Council. A recommendation that until the pipe supply improved only one connexion be provided for sprinkler services, and that there be a limit on the . pipe, was adopted by the council. Cast iron was the only type of pipe really suitable in city streets, reported the committee. Next came steel. Cement asbestos was not considered desirable. Suitable steel pipe had not been available for a long time, and cast iron was in very short supply. The position was further aggravated by the fact that, in order to get the maximum insurance rebate of about 42J per cent., two connexions were required; with one connexion the rebate was reduced to 27$ per cent The committee suggested it was better to give some improved fire protection to a larger number by installing one connexion only to the sprinkler systems. Cr. J. L. Hay said two connexions were essential. “We haven’t the piping.” replied Cr. W. P. Glue.
