Mr J. Monteath’s retirement from the teaching staff of Christ’s College after more than 43 years was marked yesterday by a gathering of old boys in Big School. Mr Monteath’s health was Ptpposed by Mr W. C. Weston, New Plymouth, president of the old boys’ association. Mr Monteath, in his reply, recalled incidents of his long connexion with the school, including the founding of the book exchange and the establishment of the day boy houses, North Town and South Town, later Julius and Harper Houses. He was for many years housemaster of North Town and Julius House.. The Rev. A. H. Scrivin, of Auckland, .who is general secretary for foreign missions of the Methodist Church in New Zealand, is at present visiting Christchurch. Mr H. A. Campbell, of Mundy’s road, has been appointed an honorary inspector for the prevention of vandalism in the Burwood district by the reserves committee of the City Council. Mr L. F. Withers, who has been appointed assistant general manager to the State Hydro-electric Department, received his early training with the M.E.D., which he left to join the electrical branch of the Public Works Department in 1923. A message of congratulation has been sent to Mr Withers by the electricity committee of the City Council. Dr. and Mrs Herbert Money, who will return to Peru to-morrow, after a year’s furlough in New Zealand, were given a public interdenominational farewell at the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church last evening. Dr. Money is to take up another five years’ service with the Peru Bible Society at Lima. He is also secretary of the National Evangelical Council of Peru. Mr W. T. Brown has been appointed as waterworks inspector by the City Council. Mr Brown is at present employed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
