When the Union Steam Ship Company’s present orders for new ships are completed, the fleet would be numerically larger than ever, said Mr J. N. Greenland, managing director of the company, who arrived in the Aorangi to-day after a world business tour. He said the company would have acquired 27 new ships since the end of the war, some of which would be in service by the end of the year. Details had already been given of a new Islands fruit and passenger ship, for which an order had been placed with Denny Brothers in Great Britain, said Mr Greenland. Two 6000-ton freighters for the Tasman trade had also been ordered, and two 3000-ton motor-ships for the coastal trade. In addition, two more 3000-ton motorships had been ordered from Australia. One of the 6000-ton ships, the Kaitoke, and two smaller ships, the Kaitangata and the Konui, were expected to be in service by September. Mr Greenland said it was intended to carry on with plans for two 20,000-ton liners for ihe Pacific service. In the meantime efforts were being made to charter a suitable vessel to supplement the Aorangi. He and his co-directors of the Canadian-Australasian Line had conferred in Montreal recently when this . course was decided. There was no likely ' vessel offering at the moment.
