THE EXCHANGE RATE

Sir, —Your correspondents, Matt Grant and others, try to twist statements of several people, including the chairman of the Stock Exchange, Mr S. G. Holland, and others, about the alteration of the exchange rate, and your correspondents are evidently trying to throw dust in the eyes of your readers. The true facts are that whereas a farmer sending £lOO worth of produce to England at the present time will only receive £lOO, had the exchange rate not been altered he ( would have received £125 for the same produce; and all arguments canndt alter the fact that £125 worth of currency would purchase more than £lOO worth of goods, no matter how one tries to twist figures. The tion in exchange will not help Britain, for tie reason that Mr Nash will not allow any increase in the quantity of goods imported.—Yours, etc., R T. WILLAN. August 23, 1948.
