QUESTION ASKED IN HOUSE
REFERENCE TO MISSING £l6OO
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 22. Mr J. B. Cotterill (Government, Wanganui) gave notice in the House of Representatives to-ddy to ask the Minister in charge of Police (Mr P. Fraser) the following questions:— "Whether he will take the earliest opportunity of assuring this House and the country:— “First, that everything possible is being done to trace Mr Walter Ashton, a prominent Auckland Communist, whose abandoned car was found on the lonely Piha beach two months ago. “Second, that everything possible is being done to trace the sum of £l6OO which was voted as aid for Rusisa by the Auckland Trades Council. “Third, that the missing man has not been caught in the sweep of Moscow’s sickle.”
In a note to the question, Mr Cotterill quoted press reports of last week’s meeting of the Auckland Trades Council, at which it was stated that the Soviet Legation in Wellington had refused to give anything in writing when asked if the missing money had been received by the legation.
